Most string orchestra arrangements follow a predictable path: the students open the music, learn their specific notes, and “play the song.” While that builds reading skills, it often misses the most exciting part of being a musician—creativity.

When I designed Flexible Fiddling, I wanted to move beyond the page. That’s why every arrangement is built on a foundation of Building Blocks. These aren’t just parts; they are the keys to musical independence.

What are the Building Blocks?

Unlike standard arrangements, Flexible Fiddling ensures that every student in the room understands the anatomy of a fiddle tune. We break it down into three essential roles:

  1. The Bass Line: The harmonic foundation.
  2. The Backup (or Chopping): The rhythmic heartbeat.
  3. The Melody: The lead voice.

The best part? Everyone learns everything. When every student knows the bass line and the melody, the classroom dynamic shifts from “following instructions” to “making music.”

Creative Freedom in the Classroom

The Building Blocks give you and your students the tools to become arrangers.

  • Total Flexibility: Want to give the basses the melody and the violins the bass part? Do it!
  • Harmonic Understanding: Every part includes chord symbols. This helps students internalize the harmony and actually understand what they are chopping when they play an accompaniment part.
  • Expand the Band: These arrangements are designed to grow. You can easily add mandolins, banjos, ukuleles, guitars, or piano to give your orchestra that authentic “fiddle band” feel.

From the Classroom to the Jam Session

We don’t just start and stop the music; we teach the “wrappers” of the genre. Students learn how to execute a proper kick-off to start the tune and a tag to end it.

Most importantly, we use a structured call-and-response framework to encourage improvisation. Students learn to create their own original instrumental breaks within a safe, supportive structure.

Why This Matters

While each set includes a fully polished orchestra arrangement ready for your next concert program, the real goal is much bigger. This creative work prepares your students for life beyond the classroom. By mastering these Building Blocks, you are giving them the skills and confidence to participate in jam sessions and bands for the rest of their lives.
